Mosaizer - Not just another mosaic creator

Gallery of examples with Mosaizer Pro

It is highly recommended to download the latest version of Mosaizer Pro to (re)create the examples that are shown here. Some of the effects and features in this gallery are not available in older versions, and some of the pictures look like a Bob Ross in 60 seconds painting...

Portrait of a young woman: painting with brushes
With the Olympics 2008 in Beijing just closed, the focus on China will gradually get less. This portrait of Zhang Ziyi may remind you of the great moments of the Olympics. We created a brush mask
  Black = transparent
reflecting a simple stroke of a crayon pencil and repainted her picture. This mask was created with Corel Painter Essentials 3 (aka MetaCreations' Painter, designed by the great software artist Kai Krause). The final picture was rendered with 60x67 cells of 36x36 pixels size. The mask was rotated in random sequence between -60 and +60 degrees of the horizontal. No post-processing was done.

Mercedes SLK: Applying an alpha mask, shaped as a jigsaw puzzle
This car has been build from hundreds of pieces from the same picture. The Mosaizer tool has cut the original photo into 494 sub-cells
  Menu detail showing the Mosaizer settings
of 48x48 pixels each. These temporary files were then used to build the same picture again. The resulting picture contained more than 2000 bitmaps ('sub-cells'). The jigsaw effect was achieved by using an alpha mask, in the shape of a single jigsaw puzzle
  Black = transparent
piece.
The result was not post-processed, no additional cell coloring nor any blending with the original picture was done. When a finer mesh of jigsaw puzzles would have been chosen, the match with the original would certainly improve, but the effect of the puzzle mask would get less.

The Pink Panther was reconstructed from it's original bitmap. No masks were used
Similar to the Mercedes SLK above, the original bitmap of the Pink Panther was cut into many sub-cells, and rebuilt again from its own pieces. The entire action took less than 1 second to cut, and 3 seconds to rebuild again. The Mosaizer feature is fully automated to realize such creative results. This example shows that even a simple cartoon drawing can be turned into a little piece of art.

What is a text mosaic?
This picture was made in 3 steps. First we created a background
  Randomised background, using every picture from the library
with a random color pattern. This can be done in Photoshop (RGB noise) but we used Mosaizer Pro to assure that all library colors (pictures) were used. Settings: 'start with colored canvas','use every picture' and 'randomise', 124x28 cells. In Photoshop we then added the text in the resulting picture and saved it as smaller picture
  New source file for creating the text photo mosaic
(no need for large size here). Finally we loaded this picture back into Mosaizer Pro and rendered this picture with a circular mask and mosaic pattern, using the same picture library. Thanks to Linda for the idea.

Apply a source mask to outline any shape you like
This dollar sign was built up from a library of 4 pictures
  Just 4 pictures were used to create the dollar-sign 3D picture
: the half dollar and the dime coins and their reverse sides. Next a circular mask
  Designed for the coins
was used, to filter out the white space of the pictures, leaving only the coin area to be shown. We used the shadow FX
  Detail settings for shadow FX
with only moderate shade settings to create a simple shadow for each coin.
Finally a source mask
  Black = transparent
was applied. This mask is similar to the alpha mask, where only the white pixels are merged with the background. In this case the source picture was the same as the source mask to assure the correct aspect ratio of the result, which appears to be extremely realistic.

These Hollywood film star text was made by combining several functions of Mosaizer Pro
First, the appropriate library of pictures was selected. This was done with great care, to only include photo's on which the film stars were photographed in a similar pose, to assure the position of the head in the same position on the bitmap. To create the 'white' background, we made a copy of each of the library pictures, and increased its overall luminance with +200 (out of 255), to have a second set of photo's which are almost white. Then we used the Libraizer to create the final library combining these two sets of pictures.
Next, a special alpha mask was made, that was shaped like an upside-down-egg
  Gray = semi transparent
, to capture the faces nicely. To make sure that the faces were matched with the Hollywood text, we colored the source text
  Text color matches with skin color
a bit 'fleshy'.
Finally, we simply built a photo mosaic, with the mosaic pattern
  Detail of setting
, 48x48 pixels cells (93x15 cells in total), and checked the box 'use all pictures'.

Drink? Don't drive! Applying a 3D alpha mask with a shade
This picture was made with help of the so-called 32-bit masks
  Left: the beer-capsule overlay.
  Right: the transparency mask
. A 32-bit mask is a combination of an overlay mask and a transparency ('normal') mask. This way a range of new effects are created which is impossible to achieve by any other bitmap editor. Even sophisticated Adobe Photoshop plug-ins can not achieve this result. This approach also follows the open architecture philosophy of the alpha masks, meaning that the user can add any self-made overlay to the application.
In the example shown below, the Volvo logo was built from 9991 individual beer capsules (103x97 cells), of size 96x96 pixels. The resulting picture (6592 x 6208 pixels, 119 Mb) shows the effect of the combination of four effects: an overlay mask (3D effect), an alpha mask (to isolate the beer capsule), the shade FX to create a more realistic 3D effect and rotating masks and cells.

Use the Genuine Paintbrush to free-draw any shape or text you like on any canvas you need
This beer text was made by hand with the Wacom Graphire Pen Tablet. Drawing with a pen is so much more convenient than using a mouse. The background
  A black back
was simply set to black. This picture was made in about 4 seconds time. Edvard Munch's Madonna served as mosaic color mapping and the beercap 32bit overmay mask was chosen as type of 'paint', and no special settings were applied. Just straightforward drawing. With the eraser
  Draw or erase?
functionality some corrections were made. That's all.

The new mask rotating options can create realistic paint effects
A new feature that comes with Mosaizer Pro is the possibility to dynamically rotate and resize a mask. The user can indicate between what angles the rotation can take place. Each cell is then painted with a mask, where the position is randomly rotated between the given boundaries. These examples were made with two different masks that simulates a chalk drawing: a long stroke (left) and a short wide stroke (right) . The size parameters was set to 2.0, and the type fill on 'Colorize' to create a solid color fill.

Spring colors: Limitless multi-photo generation
It took less than 4 minutes to generate this huge bitmap from a library of almost 1000 paintings. The red circles are enlarged on the right side, with the corresponding close-up pictures.
The resulting 236 Mb bitmap contains 56,650 cells, equal to 9888 x 13200 pixels. To create the effect of a giant painting, the subcells were 48 x 48 pixels in size, and the 'circle' alpha mask
  Black = transparent
was applied.

The tree-flake: cold winter picture from a snowflake mask
This photograph was taken two days before Christmas, when the sky was blue and the temperature far below zero. We created a snowflake
  Black = transparent
shaped mask and added this to Mosaizer Pro via the Settings Manager. The final picture was rendered with 72x72 pixels cells, colorized and with a light shadow (2 pixels on each side) and 54x74 cells in size. The random build and random pattern were both checked and set to maximum value to get the best coverage on a colored (white) canvas. We finally dramatised the scene a bit by changing the levels a using Photoshop.

The LP-cover of the first album of Gryphon: the devil is in the details
This cover has always been one of my favourites. As is the music: a strange mix of modern folk and mediaeval instruments. It's a very difficult picture to mosaize as well ! To make this picture look realistically painted, we used a 4-step approach. With each step the brush was getting smaller, while the background of the picture was taken from the previous iteration. So, from left to right: 60x60 cell size, 48x48, 24x24 and then finally 16x16 pixels. We used the mask rotation and mask resize options (the rotation angle got smaller with each iteration). We re-used the same pattern randomness settings. This picture is only 1444x1444 of size, and can be printed on A4.

Mosaic from a masked source picture and projected on a different background
The mosaic frame was made from the source picture on the right. A mask ('Malta') was used to create the frame on the left, while the original source picture was replaced with a different background picture.
This way the frame can be made from any source that differ from the background on which the mosaic result is finally projected. It is especially useful when complex effects such as random build, shadow and masks are required.

Springtime in Holland: colorful details of fresh leaves
It took about 5 minutes to generate this picture of springtime from a library of 3350 singles and LP covers from 60's-90's. The resulting 420 Mb bitmap contains 28,324 cells of 72 x 72 pixels each (10512 x 13968 pixels). An Escher mask
  Black = transparent
was used, based on the geometric figures of M.E. Escher, a famous Dutch artist (1898-1972). Mosaizer Pro supports user-made masks, the open architecture of the software allows very creative masks to be applied, resulting in pictures like this. Unlike the Mercedes SLK, we have chosen to show the black edges of the mask. This is a feature that is user-controlled via the parameters of the mask.

English atmosphere: Look at the details of a dog
In 45 seconds this picture of a dog was generated from a library of 2800 paintings. Play with the controls and see the great effect of the 'egg-shaped' alpha mask. The resulting 36 Mb bitmap contains 5590 cells of 48 x 48 pixels each (4128 x 3120 pixels).

Liberty Statue: Mosaizer Pro can generate multi-photo's with 8 different patterns
This pattern is 'Mosaic'. The default is 'Square', and also rectangular portrait and landscape is possible, brickwise or straight. This well known picture shows the effect of the mosaic brick pattern very nicely. The picture was generated with the Mosaizer function.

The new built-in filters can create 3D effects
Several built-in filters are now available from Mosaizer version 4.4 and below, examples of these filters are shown. Each effect has specific controls to set the required effect. From left to right:
- shade: the amount and depth of the shade can be manually set
- buttonize square (and rectangular) cells
- buttonize circular cells
- apply a wave filter to create distortion effects
